What made you decide to work with us at Educated Nannies?
I moved to California in 2018, after nannying full-time for families in Richmond, VA, for six years. I was new to California and the concept of a nanny agency. The Educated Nannies website caught my eye, initially because of its beautiful layout, and more so because of what they stand for. Their values align with my own, as I view nannying as more than just a job; it is my calling in life, a meaningful and rewarding career. I registered with Educated Nannies over six years ago and have never needed another agency. From my initial interactions with the folks at EN, I appreciated their professional and prompt communication, and when I met Ryan in person, I knew I was in good hands. It is so fitting that Ryan is now a certified life coach because she has always been a caring mentor to me since we first met. I’m so grateful to know her.
What is your favorite aspect of your job as a nanny?
It is hard to choose just one! I love it all. Knowing I’m playing a unique and meaningful role in the children’s lives, while easing the mental load of their hardworking parents, is what puts pep in my step each day.
How did you know you wanted to be a nanny?
I have many fond memories of babysitting throughout high school and college, but I hadn’t considered childcare as a career until after I had done five years of office admin work post-college. My first niece had just been born, and something about holding that newborn baby in the hospital that day inspired me to incorporate my “fun auntie” energy into my day-to-day life. I decided to switch gears from office work to childcare, and since making that switch, I can’t imagine my life any other way. Thankfully, my first full-time nanny family was a real gem (I’m still in touch with them twelve years later). Those three amazing boys and their wonderful parents changed my life for the better. I learned so much from them, the children and parents alike, as I witnessed firsthand the chaos and pure love that is parenting. I admired and respected the parents so much as they juggled parenthood and their own careers. It gave me joy to know I was helping them be the best parents they could be. I loved finding a career that allowed me to utilize my patience and creativity in ways that office work never did.
What one piece of advice would you share with the next generation of nannies?
Know your worth. When you enjoy what you do, it shows. The children see it, and the parents see it. When we are present and attentive, we nannies make the day-to-day go smoothly for the families we help. Our work is vital, and when we put our hearts into it, we are able to make lasting connections with children and families. Also, stay hydrated.
What one “must-have” item do you always have on hand at work?
Boring answer: wipes. Non-boring answer: one of those stretchy chicken flingers.
Anything else you would like to share that is nanny-related?
Working with young children is a gift. It is beautiful how they are always in the present moment, and it is worth noting how good it feels in our chaotic world to be truly present. I have learned so much from my nanny children and their parents over the course of my career. Nannying is such a unique career, and there’s really nothing quite like it. It’s deeply personal, and when professional boundaries are upheld, it can be a beautiful relationship. Having a wonderful agency like Ryan’s as a support system is priceless. She wants us all to thrive, children, parents, and nannies alike.
